It’s nearing that time of the year when we’re allowed to flaunt our Aussie twang, chug copious amounts of coldies, scoff barbie-brewed chops and relish our nationality. Yes, we’re talking about Australia Day. Apart from the bliss of having a day off, Australia Day brings smiles nationwide because we can rightly enjoy doing what we do best- be a ‘fair crack of the whip, no bum-steer’ Aussie. Oh, and get totally maggered as a nation- something we also do quite well. To ensure you get the best out of the day, we’ve got our top ten things to do this Australia Day and if we’ve missed anything let us know below.


10. 'Aussie flag' yourself



This is the only day where you drape yourself with the Aussie flag. Usually, if you see a bloke wearing Aussie flag thongs, a wife beater and stubbies you'd be right to think he's a complete douche. BUT Australia Day justifies this patriotic yet puerile act so make sure to get your flags out!

9. Hold an Aussie slang contest



Sure you'd look like a few kangaroos loose in the top paddock, slagging your mates off with Aussie slang but nothing gets more Aussie than this. Get your mates/ together and have a bonza of a convo using only Aussie Slang...struth!

8. Go to the pub

Er...not that we ever need an excuse to head down to our local watering hole but Australia Day is also known as the 'Day to get shit-faced' so join in the fun!

7. Go the beach



Babes in bikinis, the toasting sun and the refreshing clear Aussie sea...what more could you want!?

6. Aussie movie marathon


Aussies have made bloody awesome flicks during the years and to show your support of the Aussie film industry (which c'mon, let's be honest...we hardly do) grab yourself a stack of films that star Aussies or were directed by Aussies.

5. watch fireworks



New year's Eve fireworks and Australia Day fireworks are the only two times in the year when a ridiculous amount of money is spent on crackers in the sky. And it's oh so worth it!

4. Listen to the triple j hottest 100




Australians everywhere to vote for their favourite song and the results are played on a countdown on Triple J...the Aussie tunes don't get any better than this!

3. Play cricket



Grab your mates together and play some cricket in your backyard. Sure, it might be challenging scoring a wicket with a stubbie in your hand (or being blind drunk) but it's un-Australian playing it any other way on this day.

2. Go to the BDO


The Big Day Out = Aussies coming together to revel in Aussie rock and enjoy the babes waering next to  nothing while chilling with mates. Bloody awesome.

1. Hold a BBQ



Of course this is our number one idea for Australia Day- in encompasses all of the above! After a swim in the beach, put some snags on the barbie, while listening to Triple J hottest 100 and regurgitating Aussie slang in between sips of beer. After gorging yourself silly, play a game of cricket while testing your knowledge of Aussie films and watch the firework and BDO highlights at home. All this while wearing your Aussie flag singlet, of course.
